Prof. Hironori Ishigami
Dr. Ishigami graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1991 and received training in general surgery at the university hospital and its affiliated hospitals. He worked as an assistant professor of the Department of Surgical Oncology, the University of Tokyo from 2003 to 2010. He assumed the position of the vice director of the Department of Chemotherapy in 2010 and now concurrently serves as the associate professor of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine, the University of Tokyo. He is an expert in gastric cancer specializing not only in surgery but also in endoscopic treatment for early gastric cancer and chemotherapy for advanced gastric cancer. He started a clinical trial of combined intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapy for gastric cancer with peritoneal metastasis in 2006 and completed many clinical trials as a principal investigator including the phase III PHOENIX-GC trial. He showed the efficacy of long-term normothermic intraperitoneal taxanes and gastrectomy after response to combination chemotherapy. Now he devotes himself to make the new multidisciplinary treatment adopted nationwide and worldwide.
